When outside (particularly at night), table scraps, garbage, bird feeders, pet foods and water in any form provide a strong attraction for a number of wildlife species including raccoon, opossum, skunk and even rats. Every animal needs food, water and shelter. Providing just one of three can put your property at risk. This can eventually lure animals into creating damage or attempting to find/create shelter on the property if food and/or water is readily available. If land is not properly managed, control measures such as trapping are not warranted until the landowner is properly educated and proper trash handling is implemented to permanently eliminate the attraction.

The activities of people often create habitat for animals that eventually can become a problem. Urban sprawls, piles of brush, wood, rocks, dense vegetation and shrubs provide cover for a wide variety of wildlife. Don't forget about bees and snakes! (see our pictures). Better management of these areas often reduces their attractiveness to wildlife species causing the problem. Plugging and covering holes into buildings and under porches with rocks and rubbish are sometimes futile efforts that can be implemented to solve a problem. Locking animals inside the house will lead to a much larger problem. Wait may be as many as 72 hours to find out if an attempt failed. Many times this option will provide the most sustainable long-term solution to a nuisance wildlife problem. Poor building design and/or poor maintenance, can provide easy access to wildlife, this can be corrected. Exclusion, such as barriers, specialized fences, screening and repairs to existing vents, chimneys (screens and caps) or foundations are very effective at keeping wild animals away from areas where they are not wanted. Harassment such as a radio and/or lights in the crawl space or attic may prove effective for eviction purposes, permanent measures will still be needed long term.
